Utsuro-bune (hollow ship)
Hirokata Zuihitsu (Essays by Hirokata), Hyoryu Kishu (Archives of Castaways) and Kawaraban Surimono, a newspaper extra, were all published in the Edo period and relate the tale of a mysterious incident that supposedly took place in 1803 (the replicas one shown n this show).
An utsuro-bune (hollow ship), similar in shape to the present-day concept of the UFO, drifted ashore on the coast of Hitachi Province (now Ibaraki Prefecture). The inside of the ship was printed with strange lettering, and on board was a beautiful woman. Do these materials present evidence of a UFO landing in Edo-period Japan? The answer remains veiled in mystery.
