This marks our final edition of "LOVE" in a Minute, showcasing a selection of artists and their work in Mori Art Museum's "All You Need Is LOVE" exhibition currently earning rave reviews. We close with Untitled by British contemporary artist supreme, Damien Hirst. At a glance, the sweet symbol of love, his large pink heart is a standout in the gallery space, however therein lies Hirst's cynical humor... "LOVE" in a Minute has provided a mere taste of all the many exciting works by great artists featured in "All You Need Is LOVE." The show runs till Sunday, September 1, 2013. Don't miss it!
One of the most prominent names in British contemporary art since the 1990s, Damien Hirst is known for his trademark series of three-dimensional works that encased sharks, cows, and other animals in formaldehyde. His early works, many of which evoke life and death, used a "ready-made" approach that displayed the likes of drugs and insects "as it is."
The exhibited work, Untitled (2000), features butterflies adhered to a pink canvas. The shape of the canvas is a reference to the heart-shaped birthday cards popular in the UK. The irony is that the card, made to celebrate a birthday with love, involves the death of butterflies. With his cynical humor, Hirst forces us to ponder life and death.
