Round 15 of "LOVE" in a Minute spotlights top British artist David Hockney. On exhibit this time is My Parents, a painting in which Hockney portrays his mother and father together with some of the classics of art and literature he also loves.
One of the most well-known British artists in the world, David Hockney continues to produce ambitious works with a variety of media in addition to painting, including photography, opera stage design, and drawing using an iPhone or iPad. In My Parents (1977), included in the exhibition, Hockney creates a naturalistic portrayal of his father engrossed in reading and his mother facing the viewer, in quiet composure. From 1963, Hockney created series of paintings using vibrant-colored acrylic paints, however by the early 1970s his production shifted to a style reminiscent of classic works. That inclination can be seen in this work through the detailed portrayal of the figures and a balanced composition.
Classic works that captured Hockney's interest at the time can be seen, such as a book on Chardin in the cabinet and Piero della Francesca's The Baptism of Christ (1450s) reflected in the mirror. The juxtaposition of his father and mother with these beloved works appears to be testimony thatoffers us a glimpse at Hockney's parents were also a major influencefilial feelings.
