Unveiling Theaster Gates Exhibition #4: Black Vessels for Doric Temple

2024.7.16 [Tue]

Fired in Chicago and in Tokoname, Gates’ black vessels act as containers for the spirit. Moved by the sculptural possibilities in clay, Gates experiments with hybrid forms that evoke African, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese ceramic traditions. The “Black Vessel” series highlights the alchemical role that ash and the flame play in the days-long firing process. An anagama (cave kiln) is fueled with firewood, the flames of which affect the surface of a vessel and produce a distinctive texture on the clay body.
