Unveiling Theaster Gates Exhibition #1: “Shrine” Section
2024.6.24 [Mon]
We are introducing the very essence of the Theaster Gates: Afro-Mingei exhibition currently on view at the Mori Art Museum in a web series (in five installments).
Theaster Gates: Afro-Mingei exhibition opens with a section named “Sacred Spaces.”
For Theaster Gates, making is a spiritual act and his artworks often channel the divine through music, ritual, poetry, and the vessel. Gates, regarded as an artist with exceptional ability to create sacred spaces of gathering and aesthetic dimensionality, both evokes and imbues his works with poetic ritual significance.
This section hosts a site-specific installation that offers an altar-like body of work by Gates, as well as makers he is in artistic communion with, admires, and who have influenced his practice. Through this installation, Gates invites us into his personal reliquarium of craft.
