Ai Weiwei (Born 1957 in Beijing) has one of the highest profiles of any artist in the world today. His exhibition Ai Weiwei: According to What? staged at the Mori Art Museum in 2009 went on to tour five North American museums from 2012 to 2014, including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and Brooklyn Museum.
Ai Weiwei subsequently relocated to Europe, from where he continues to present works that interrogate aspects of basic human rights and global sustainability, such as refugee and environmental issues.
The Mori Art Museum and the Japan Art Association are now delighted to host a conversation with Ai Weiwei to mark the awarding to him of the 33rd Praemium Imperiale (Sculpture category). As the world confronts a plethora of grave challenges, the artist will discuss the social significance of the arts, primarily through the lens of his own activities in art, film and writing over the past decade or so since his solo exhibition at the Mori Art Museum and its tour of the US and Canada.
