Japanese-English simultaneous interpretation available
In the context of the European debt crisis, the Occupy Movement that started on Wall Street and the general mood of uncertainty that has spread globally, new approaches and innovative management are being sought in art museums all over the world. In the United State particularly, where museums are largely supported by private sponsorship, creativity of programming and the nurturing of new audiences and new supporters, in short reinventing themselves have become crucial tasks.
For "Urgent Talk 011," we welcome Jay Xu, Director of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, one of the largest museums in the Western world devoted exclusively to Asian Art with collection of 17,000 items since 1966. Xu assumed the museum’s directorship in 2008 at age 45 and has been conducting a new branding campaign in 2011. In 2012, museum will hold its first full-fledged exhibition of Asian contemporary art "Phantoms of Asia: Contemporary Awakens the Past." In this lecture, Xu will discuss his views on Asia’s recent rise in the world and the challenges facing him as director of the museum.
At the conclusion of the lecture, Mori Art Museum Chief Curator Kataoka Mami will make a brief presentation of "Phantoms of Asia" which she is guest-curating.
