Urgent Talk 032: CHOICE MATTERS
- How Artists and Museum Professionals Make Choices in the Context of Making, Collecting, Display, Storage and Preservation
* Booked Out
Japanese-English simultaneous interpretation available
Contemporary art is diversified and represented by artworks that vary in materials and expression. Some of them may be ephemeral in nature, organic in expression, deceptively fragile, purposefully disorganized and obsessively detailed. Various choices are considered not only by the artist but also the curator, installer, and conservator. Through active collaborations with artists such art specialists help realize complex contemporary artworks with better understanding.
How does this research undertaken by artists differ from that performed by experts and researchers in the relevant fields, or at universities and other institutions of higher education? The works that are the outcome of such research are many and varied in form, including installation, text, sound, and lecture performance, but how do these differ from Conventional works of art?
We welcome Mr. Roger Griffith, Associate Conservator who is engaged in the preservation and conservation at Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York for the past 19 years, to explore new viewpoints with regards to materials, and the process of art making as well as the collaborative efforts necessary when making choices for long-term preservation and conservation of modern and contemporary art.
