The environment surrounding contemporary art in the Arab world is going through a period of rapid maturation. In the context of quick economic development and internationalization, the region’ s artists are occupied with such issues as identity, stubbornly pervasive stereotypes of their societies, history, collective memory and self-expression by women. This is the first symposium ever held in Japan to explore contemporary art in the Arab world from multiple viewpoints, and we hope it will lead to continued dialogue between Japan and the Arab countries. Curatorial advisor Salwa Mikdadi will give an overview of Arab art today while Arab literature and third-world feminism scholar Oka Mari will moderate a panel discussion with the artists participating in the exhibition.

MAMC Night is a special way for MAMC members to enjoy exhibitions at the
Mori Art Museum.
This time it will feature two events to help you gain a deeper understanding of the art on display: a gallery talk and a slideshow by Mori Art Museum director, Nanjo Fumio.
In the gallery talk, curatorial staff member Tagomori Miho will not only describe works on show but also reveal behind-the-scenes stories from the making of the exhibition that you won't hear in regular gallery talks.
In the slideshow, Mori Art Museum director Nanjo Fumio, who has visited the
Arab region for research on multiple occasions over the last 30-plus years, will present a selection of some of the thousands of photographs he has taken during his journeys.
Full of insights into the Arab world from before the present era of change and transformation, the photographs will provide useful background information for viewing the exhibition.
We hope you will join us as we turn our thoughts to the distant but important
Arab region.

All of you MAMC members must have heard of the phrase "Artist in Residence" a number of times -- would you be interested in knowing what those artists staying in Japan utilizing this system do, under what types of circumstances...
And, how we are going to witness their results...?
This year's "MAMC Members' Gathering" will be a very special, fall art study session program; it will be the viewing of "Home Again - 10 Artists Who Have Experienced Japan" currently on view at Hara Museum of Contemporary Art, combined with a special talk titled "What Is Artist-in-Residence, in Fact?"
organized by Arts Initiative Tokyo [AIT], an NPO that is undertaking and advocating artist-in-residence in Japan in various ways.
Hara Museum of Contemporary Art was voted as the top favorite Tokyo museum by the twitter followers of Casa Brutus that conducted the survey in 2010. The secrets behind such popularity is not just about the exhibition contents but the coziness and comfort that the Museum offers.
This Gathering is a very special occasion where we spend half a day at such a museum, enjoy the exhibition and the lunch, and gain a little knowledge on artist-in-residence.
The capacity is limited, we recommend early booking.
We look forward to your participation in this year's MAMC Members' Gathering!
