Untitled (I Have Been to Hell and Back): Unveiling Louise Bourgeois Exhibition #3

2024.12.20 [Fri]

Untitled (I Have Been to Hell and Back) 1996

The subtitle of the exhibition, I have been to hell and back. And let me tell you, it was wonderful. is taken from a late fabric work in which Bourgeois embroidered these words on a handkerchief.
With her trademark black humor, this ironic phrase conveys Bourgeois’s resilience and survival despite her ongoing suffering.

Bourgeois carefully kept clothing and other items used by her family members, incorporating them as materials for her artwork. In this piece, she embroidered words she wrote in her diary on a handkerchief used by her late husband. In creating this work of art, Bourgeois shows her resilience and survival despite her many hardships.
