Featuring the Highlights of the Theaster Gates Exhibition Audio Commentary produced by Youth Ambassadors

“Art Camp for under 22” is a program for 13-22 year olds to think about contemporary art in a place that is neither school nor home. For Theaster Gates: Afro-Mingei, the program participants served as youth ambassadors for the exhibition and produced audio commentaries introducing the works on display in their own words.

Group 1: Seven Songs, 2022

In creating this audio commentary, we worked hard to record the script and audio with a natural sound so that it would not sound unnatural to the listener, and we rewrote the script many times. It also took time to come up with a concept that would match the audio commentary with the atmosphere of the exhibition space, and we had many long discussions about this. Ultimately, we tried to write this commentary from the viewer’s perspective, emphasizing the “I don’t understand” feeling we had when we first saw the work, so that even people who are not particularly interested in contemporary art can understand and enjoy the work Seven Songs.
We hope that those who listen to this audio commentary will feel closer to contemporary art, and that it will help them appreciate works whose intentions or stories may be difficult to understand at first glance.
Group 2: The Koide Yoshihiro Collection, 1941-2022

We created this audio commentary in a way that allows you to overhear the conversations of people nearby while viewing the exhibits. Many people may have an image of art appreciation as being stiff and difficult, but we believe that there are no rules for how to enjoy art, and that it’s okay to be free. For this reason, we created an audio commentary in the form of friends talking candidly about the works of art, asking each other questions. Our commentary is on The Koide Yoshihiro Collection, but it also touches on the “Black Library & Black Space” in the second part, so it might be interesting to think about the similarities between the two. At the end of the commentary, we asked a question to the listeners, so please don’t get caught up in our commentary, but feel free to think about the art itself!

Hello! This is Youth Ambassador Group 3! We have created a special audio commentary to share the charm of the Theaster Gates: Afro-Mingei exhibition with you!
This commentary was created by us, the Youth Ambassadors, who earnestly engaged with Theaster Gates’ works through four activities and worked with the museum staff to learn more about their historical, social, and cultural backgrounds. In order to make it easy to listen to and understand, we have tried to convey the profound charm of the works in a dialogue format that you can enjoy with your friends.
We put special effort into recording the audio, carefully recording every word while imagining the moment when you will be really tuned into the commentary. We together decided on which works to feature, discussed what our intuitive impressions were🗣, what we noticed when we looked closely, and sometimes drew pictures🖼 while thinking about what to write🧐
When the four of us were thinking about the manuscript📃, we paid particular attention to choosing soft, easy-to-understand words. Also, during the actual recording🎙, we all made a conscious effort to speak as clearly as possible.
