MACHINE LOVE Workshop “It Might Be a Body” (Two-day Program)
MACHINE LOVE Related Program
Conducted in Japanese
Together with Sato Ryotaro, one of the artists featured in the MACHINE LOVE exhibition, we will hold a workshop where participants can create their own avatars. First, participants will use a 3D scanner to scan their own body and personal belongings, and collect the parts that will make up the avatar. On the second day, participants will combine these parts in the Unity game engine and manipulate this data on the screen to the desired position and appearance. Can an avatar made up of parts of one’s body and personal belongings be seen as an alter ego of the participant? Following Sato’s creative techniques, we will consider digital data avatars and human identity.
A message from the artist:
I would like to think with you about other bodies that have not been with us since birth. For example, characters from games you often play, worn-out shoes, controllers, wooden sticks found in the park, tennis rackets you used to use, bicycles, roadside signs, hanging advertisements on trains, tools that you don’t know what they are used for, people dancing on the screen, people not dancing, etc. These could also be part of our bodies.

Sato Ryotaro
Born 1999 in Hokkaido, Japan; lives in Kanagawa, Japan
While in graduate school, Sato began creating films using game engines based on data “assets” circulating on the Internet, such as the 3D models, textures, and animations used in video games. According to the artist, he was influenced by the culture of sampling and MAD videos (*1) in the post-Internet era. His absurd stories in which various characters such as soldiers, girls, and animals repeatedly appear recall the short stories of Abe Kobo and others, as well as the pictorial space of Surrealism, while at the same time questioning the value of human existence and life in contemporary society. In this exhibition, he will present a new video piece in which the assets characters that exist just as various signs are released into the homogenized space of a suburban area.
