Learning Week
“Learning Week” will feature various programs designed to put “learning” into concrete practice. Programs implemented previously as exhibition-related public programs will also be reconfigured as learning practice. As well, as a new platform for debate aimed at encouraging the vigorous exchange of opinions among organizers and participants, we will launch a new series called “Learning Camp” to be implemented in collaboration with other institutions. Furthermore, we will also be implementing a collaborative program in conjunction with A New Wave of Art for Social Change: Socially Engaged Art exhibition at 3331 Arts Chiyoda to be held by the Art & Society Research Center, a non-profit organization engaged in ongoing research into local and overseas trends in the practice of “socially engaged art.”
* To participate in the programs during the “Learning Week” (February 14 [Tue] -19 [Sun], 2017), please buy an exhibition ticket when you take part in the first program. From the second program onwards, you will be able to enter the exhibition using the name you registered.

- This exhibition focuses on a specific art movement known as Socially Engaged Art (SEA) which has steadily emerged as a global new wave movement since the 1990s. The exhibition aims to introduce representative artists and projects from abroad such as Ai Weiwei, Pedro Reyes, Suzanne Lacy, or Park Fiction, as well as re-examine Japanese artists within the context of SEA and present them globally. In particular, the exhibit addresses the practices of Japanese artists who have become more conscious of engagement in society, especially after the events of 3/11.

- Over 20 years have passed since Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo (MOT) first opened. In that time, the Kiyosumi-shirakawa area has rapidly changed, and MOT has grown with its changes. Currently, the area is drawing interest with its blend of history dating from the Edo period (1603-1868), nostalgic old townscapes, and new cultural spaces abuzz with creativity. “MOT Satellite” is a project of uncovering Kiyosumi-shirakawa's true charm. The museum, taking advantage of its temporary closure, is going outside to engage with people, places, and history together with artists and local residents and shops. During the project period, artwork exhibits, workshop, and other events will be held in the district.
The main exhibits will be on view in 7 “MOT Spaces” established in old factory buildings and local cultural spaces. Visitors can also walk around and enjoy small exhibits at “MOT Spots” scattered about the area in coffee roasteries and cafes and on shopping streets. The area takes about 20 minutes to walk from end to end. Plus, you won’t want to miss the “Fellow Project” activities MOT will hold in conjunction with local alternative culture spaces, and the programs of all kinds offered by our district partners.
