Yee I-Lann’s primarily photomedia- and video-based practice explores colonial history and power structures in Southeast Asia and as well as the impact this history continues to have on contemporary society. Since 2018, she has created work in collaboration with textile weavers from various communities in Borneo, Malaysia. In Southeast Asia, mats (called tikar in Malay) are traditionally laid on floors and over which daily life unfolds. For Yee, such mats are an equal platform where people gather to share stories and knowledge, and the time spent on them forms a highly intimate, shared experience that ties members of the community together. Her work has been included in many group shows and international exhibitions, such as the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art (Brisbane, 2021) and Aichi Triennale 2022 (Japan).
