Tom Sachs The Crawler
2003
Like many children born in America in the 1960s, Tom Sachs has always been fascinated by the US Space Program, and with time his interest in the subject developed into an art form. The Crawler is a large-scale model of the space shuttle “Challenger,” which broke apart 73 seconds after takeoff in 1986. The incident was a traumatic experience for the American nation. Through The Crawler, the artist lives out his dream of the space explorer and navigates his imaginary galaxy. The work reminds us of the many failures behind every brilliant success for science and technology.
