Galileo Galilei Sidereus nuncius (“Starry Messenger”), first edition
1610
Inspired by the invention of the practically functioning telescope in 1608, Galileo Galilei created his own refracting telescope, and used it to make astronomical observations.
He published the results of his observations, which included the nature of the Moon's craters, the moons of Jupiter, and the waxing and waning of Venus, in this volume, Sidereus Nuncius, complete with beautifully illustrated plates. Stating as it did that the geocentric theory widely held to be true was a mistake, and illustrating that the Copernican heliocentric theory of astronomy was correct, the book caused quite a sensation and had a major effect on the direction of subsequent astronomical study.
