“Uchu no Hi” (Space Day) was established by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) Institute of Space and Astronautical Science to mark the day (September 12, 1992) that Mohri Mamoru boarded the Space Shuttle to become the first Japanese national in space. For “The Universe and Art” exhibition, to coincide with Uchu no Hi, Cafe Area THE SUN at the Museum Cafe & Restaurant THE SUN & THE MOON offers a special tie-in menu that extends the cosmic experience of the exhibition into dining.
A limited number of exhibition catalogue mission emblem sets are also available for purchase at the pop-up exhibition shop.

Cosmic culinary experience guaranteed! A tempting black hole of a donburi that will suck you right in...

Black Hole Kakiage-Don 1,280 yen
Seafood (soft-shell shrimp, prawn, squid, clams) tempura-style with bamboo charcoal, topped with a quail's egg, gold leaf and silver sugar sprinkles to create a dish inspired by the sun and stars. Bamboo charcoal is also used to color the rice.

Served in a bowl of “hollow ship” design modeled on one of the exhibits
In the late Edo period, an utsurobune (lit. “hollow ship”) bearing a remarkable resemblance to a UFO and containing a beautiful young woman washed ashore in what is now Ibaraki Prefecture. For the period of “The Universe and Art” only, Cafe Area THE SUN serves a “Black Hole Kakiage-Don” in a UFO-shaped bowl inspired by an exhibit depicting this fabled incident.
