“Roppongi Crossing 2016”: Artists and Works #3 Ishikawa Ryuichi

In this third edition of a series on the “Roppongi Crossing 2016” artists and their works, we feature noted artist and recipient of the 2014 Kimura Ihei Award, Ishikawa Ryuichi.

Ishikawa Ryuichi attracted attention with the photobooks okinawan portraits 2010-2012, selecting from portraits of some 3000 Okinawans, and A Grand Polyphony, a collection of Okinawan portraits and landscapes, for which he won the 2014 Kimura Ihei Award.
Here he presents previously unshown photographs capturing close-ups of faces selected from his okinawan portraits series. Compared to the series hitherto produced with their clothing and background scenery included, there is greater emphasis on the details of the gaze and expression of each individual's face, along with character-building elements such as eyeglasses and make-up, giving a more vivid impression.
On TV monitors stacked one on top of another, images from the same series are displayed as a slide show. As Ishikawa writes in okinawan portraits 2010-2012, “We become afterimages that are constantly passing each other somewhere and small enough to be buried in our memories,” this process of fleeting chance encounters is represented via his portraits being presented in multiple monitors, replayed at irregular intervals.
