What are "Go-Betweens"?
Focusing on the Childhood Characteristic of
Moving Freely to and fro across Boundaries

The Mori Art Museum will present "Go-Betweens: The World Seen through Children" from Saturday, May 31, 2014.

Photographer Jacob A. Riis, who documented the lives of poor immigrants in New York during the late 19th century, dubbed immigrant children who performed various tasks in acting as bridges for parents with a poor grasp of English, "go-betweens."

As the word used in the title, exhibition will focuses on the childhood characteristic of moving freely to and fro across all sorts of boundaries, and turns its gaze on various aspects which surround them.
Categorized into 5 sections, the exhibition will introduce 26 artists / groups.

■Section 1: Beyond Culture
Highlighting various issues surrounding children, such as migration and international adoption, by looking at children living in multicultural situations.

■Section 2: A World of Freedom and Isolation
Focusing on the loneliness peculiar to childhood, which adults tend to forget, and the world full of freedom and creativity it can bring.

Engaging with children's experiences of pain: recollections of being hurt, memories of war, day-to-day conflict etc.
