Latest information and updates on the artist Aida Makoto, his activities and his solo exhibition at the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo.
- Never repeat the same--or even similar--thing twice.
A genius artist needs to have a mind and spirit so fresh that they seem to be
suffering from repeated amnesia every single second.
- It's good to have passionate affairs and duels on a regular basis.-- Excerpts from "How to Become the Greatest Artist in the World"
To accompany this exhibition, Aida Makoto has prepared a declaration entitled "How to Become the World's Greatest Artist," in which he spells out the dos and don'ts of the profession. With these remarks full of paradox, what is the artist really trying to convey? In this session, we ask former director of the Mori Art Museum, David Elliott, who has extensive experience introducing Japanese art internationally, to analyze Aida's art from an international perspective.

The "MONUMENT FOR NOTHING II" project has been running since 2008. What are Aida Makoto's thoughts on the project? While looking back on the project's output to date, the artist will discuss in person, among other things, why he was so keen to stage these workshops at the Mori Art Museum. Any "artisans" able to take part for the whole four months of the exhibition are especially welcome. The artist will also be explaining the practicalities of the project, so this is an excellent opportunity to find out more.

For (probably most) Fridays and Saturdays over the four months of the show, from 5 to 8pm, gallery visitors will have the opportunity to participate in a workshop to collaborate in the making of MONUMENT FOR NOTHING II.
This is an ongoing project that has been touring mainly art colleges around the country since 2008. It involves employing nothing but used cardboard to create the kind of altar reliefs found in old European churches. The Christian connection is immaterial: the point is to use cheap materials to try to reproduce the collaborative creations completed over many years by legions of anonymous craftsmen that were dominant before modern views on art took shape.
So how about becoming a member of my faux group of artisans revived for today's world, the "21st Century Cardboard Guild"? You can of course take part just for one session, but those willing to commit to several consecutively are especially welcome, due to the surprising amount of time and effort required for the act of "using cardboard to make something that from a distance looks like a stone carving." This is about delving into the world of primitive manual work, not so much a matter of experience or talent as a test of stickability and endurance...enjoying an oasis for the soul perhaps, amid the hurly-burly of modern life. It would be wonderful to see you there.

As a pre-event in the lead-up to the "Aida Makoto" exhibition, the Roppongi Art College is hosting the Roppongi Art College Seminar: "The World of Aida Makoto," an event in three parts examining the messages contained in the artwork of Aida, who has been described as both a genius and a nonconformist.
Part One will take the form of a conversation between Aida and the curator of the exhibition, Kataoka Mami (Chief Curator, Mori Art Museum). The two will discuss the stories behind the artworks and the exhibition highlights.
In Part Two, REALTOKYO Editor-in-Chief Ozaki Tetsuya will act as coordinator as three guests on whom Aida's work has had an impact will share their own "theories of Aida Makoto," offering insights into Aida's worldview from the perspective of Aida Makoto fans. The three guests are Asabuki Mariko, who won the 144th Akutagawa Prize in 2011 for her novel Kikotowa while still a graduate student; Kokubo Eiichiro, an astronomer who harnesses the power of physics and computers to unravel the mysteries of the universe; and energetic manga artist and columnist Shinsan Nameko.
Part Three will introduce Aida Makoto: Heisei Kanjin Project, a project implemented to coincide with the "Aida Makoto" exhibition in which individuals who endorse and support Aida Makoto's artistic activities will be invited to sponsor the exhibition. Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy a closer and more active relationship with the artist and the museum than that traditionally enjoyed by audiences.
