Add Color Painting (Refugee Boat)
First presented in 1961, the “Add Color Painting” series invites visitors to add colors or words onto a white canvas, white globe, and so on displayed in the gallery. It forms a metaphor for the idea that every moment in our ever-changing lives is beautiful. The exhibit here, Add Color Painting (Refugee Boat), is taken from this series and deals with the recent refugee crisis. The audience can use crayons to write their wishes for peace anywhere they wish, from the wall to the floor of the exhibition space or the ship that is reminiscent of a refugee boat. Ono has consistently attempted to break down the border between art and daily life ever since the early period of her artistic career and today continues to appeal for love and peace in avant-garde yet direct ways.
