Community Engagement Program
"Usui Yui: What Shapes Me" (Two-day Program)

Louise Bourgeois Related Program

As part of the Community Engagement Program, Mori Art Museum will hold a workshop called "Usui Yui: What Shapes Me." In this workshop, artist Usui Yui will work with participants to analyze Bourgeois’s works and production methods, and each participant will create an art piece based on their experience.

Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010) was born in 1911 in Paris, to parents who ran a tapestry restoration business. Having helped out in the family business from an early age, many of her works use cloth and thread. Through her work, Bourgeois expressed various elements that shaped her, such as her relationships with family and friends, her childhood memories, and her emotions.

In this workshop, together with Usui, you will gain a deeper understanding of Bourgeois’s work and creative methods, and using this as a starting point, you will consider the beings, memories, and emotions that shape you and express them in your work. Materials will be used clothes and other fabrics filled with memories, such as those used by Bourgeois.

Bourgeois’s work also contains painful memories and traumas from the past, but it is also true that she tried to recover and find hope through creation of her work. To understand the artist’s work and creative methods more deeply, and to experience the creative process would yield a valuable opportunity for each participant to think about the meaning and role of art.

What you need to bring with you
- Sewing tools that you normally use (needles, thread, scissors, etc.).
- Fabrics and materials that will help you be conscious of “what shapes me” when creating (Clothes worn by you, your family, or loved ones, materials that you have fond memories of, etc.).
