Miyajima Tatsuo is one of Japan's most important contemporary artists. In this first MAM Art Course lecture, Miyajima explores the relationship between society and art through an introduction of his own projects such as the "Revive Time" Kaki (Persimmon) Tree Project and the "Floating Time" Hospice Project.

Miyajima Tatsuo Profile
Completed postgraduate studies in art at the Tokyo University of the Arts. In 1988 was selected to participate in the Aperto section of the Venice Biennale, where he garnered international acclaim for his work using LED digital counters. He has held many exhibitions in Japan and abroad and his works are included in the collections of Tate Gallery in London, Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo. Instigated the "Revive Time" Kaki Tree Project, whereby he plants "second generation atomic bomb victim trees" - saplings from the seeds of a tree damaged by the atomic bomb in Nagasaki - around the world with the help of children.

MAM Art Course 2008-2011

To commemorate its fifth anniversary, the Mori Art Museum presents in partnership with UBS and in collaboration with Academyhills, “MAM Art Course,” a brand new, three year series of educational courses exploring diverse facets of contemporary art. “MAM Art Course” will be a fun, educational and informative forum for thinking about the role art can play in our society and our lives. The courses will be divided into three themes, A, B and C - Art, Business and Culture - and will investigate the complex web of relations that exists between art and society.
