The National Art Center, Tokyo, the Mori Art Museum, and the Japan Foundation Asia Center will hold the exhibition SUNSHOWER: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia 1980s to Now in summer 2017, 50 years after the formation of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). This exhibition will present contemporary art from 10 ASEAN countries since the 1980s, consisting of various different themes such as aspirations for freedom, growth and its dark sides, community, different identities, faith and tradition, and the revisiting of history. In this event, we will screen two films from Singapore and Malaysia focusing on the theme of identity issues. On January 22, a talk show will be held between the screening of the two films. Curators from the National Art Center, Tokyo and the Mori Art Museum will discuss with film and performance art experts the current identity issues in Singapore and Malaysia.
